I can't speak for other writers/authors, but for me personally I enjoy becoming a subject matter expert across a wide range of topics. I really enjoy the discovery/research process.

Good ideas I find come at random moments, but the inspiration to put thoughts to paper (or computer) for me come only after my mind is well rested and free of competing thoughts. In addition to writing books, I am also the editor and writer for 7 publications that cover a wide range of subjects, so prioritizing and planning also play big parts in my writing process.
