I just start writing, and get anything at all down on paper (on screen, actually), even if I know I will throw most of it away later. The better material is waiting behind the scenes, and eventually rises to the surface once I have cleared away the awkward stuff. But I can't write the material I want to keep until I get into a regular groove.
