Yolanda A. Reid I’m currently writing my fourth book, a novel.

“The Bird’s Nest: How I Learned Chinese” is a personal essay/memoir of the life-changing journey that led me to learn Mandarin. I found myself thinking about this real-life experience, in a sort of reverie I chose to write down.

I get ideas for a novel or short story that I jot down. At times I’ve been inspired by a news item/story, but more often it’s stories my parents or grandparents shared with me. In that sense, I chronicle our family stories. (For more info, check out my essays, “How I Wrote My First Novel” and "How I Wrote My Second Novel" at http://www.thehoneyeaternovel.com/ess... .
Yolanda A. Reid I don’t get writer’s block. I have so many ideas for novels, stories, or essays.
However, on occasion, I will take a break between writing/book projects. During that time, I read and re-read my own writings, either the most recent or previous writings I shelved for one reason or another. Re-reading leads to revising. Recently, I revised a short story I wrote and shelved years ago. I’ve since decided that it was good, and that I ought to submit it for publication. However, I’ve found that sometimes I’m so attached to a story/novel that I want to keep it to myself.
