Sarah, I did have a little weep while writing it the first time. This is true of every book so far, because I don’t write stuff that doesn’t feel true to me (well, I do, but then I throw it out). I grow a lot as a person with every story I tell, and part of that means putting heart into the emotional moments. I guess it’s slightly selfish of me, but I want to write scenes that translate and then transform challenging questions in my own life. That means I get to feel all the feels for each character... for better and worse!

I’ve been a single mom since my son was a year old, and that has been a huge inspiration to help me understand Amy’s experiences. But I’ve never been a librarian, sadly! And while I lived in New York for a long time, I gave Amy a set of experiences there that were all her own. That way I got to be a tourist in my own city, so to speak, and also really let my imagination spin.

I will one day return to Minnow Bay because so much of my heart is there, and because I am deeply invested in telling Colleen's story, as well as how the little town turns around and all of Ben's cousins and brothers who each deserve an entire book of their own! But, full disclosure, the publishing imprint that published Minnow Bay is no longer in business... So please bear with me while I write a couple of stand alone titles first, become a huge star, and get to return to the North Woods as soon as humanly possible ;)
