Dan Henk Trigger Warnings by Neil Gaiman
Dan Henk I just stop what I am writing, and wait for the correct turn of the story to hit me. Sometimes it is within hours, sometimes days. I've found out that when I try to force it, nothing good comes out. I have to wait for the next great twist of plot to come to mind, but it always does, and it's like a bulb flashing to light.
Dan Henk I love telling stories. Writing allows me not only to do that, but to flesh out and fully realize what was only a base idea.
I have a vivid imagination, grew up reading comics and any fiction I could get my hands on, have been through dramatic ups and downs (like homelessness and getting stabbed by a crackhead), have traveled the world, and it's just become a compulsion.
Dan Henk Keep at it. Write all the time, get anyone and everyone to critique what you have written, and read a lot. As in, like it is going out of style and your life depends on it. You will notice that many of the best writers are prolific readers. The best directors watch a plethora of movies. the best artists are always looking at new work. None of this is a coincidence.
Dan Henk Everything I write takes place in the same continuity. Currently, I am working on the sequel to my first novel, with the incorporation of some characters and stories from my second.
Dan Henk I usually have a few skeletons of ideas floating around. When I consolidate what I think is a great idea, I save it in my notes. I will usually further refine it at random. Like on a jog, or on a long trip. Sometimes, that is the impetus to start, but oftentimes I still put it off until I feel I have the full space available to do the story justice.
Dan Henk I come up with ideas totally at random. When I think an idea is strong, I make a note of it in my iPhone. When it comes time to write a new story, I already have a backlog of ideas to work with. Usually, I have too many, and have to whittle down what I think are relevant to the work at hand.
