This is a tough question for me to answer because I've always been inspired to write. It's not something I have to seek -- it's an ever-flowing gift.

I am rewriting the very first novel I wrote, which has been sitting on an old hard drive for a decade waiting for me to get back to it.

Writing takes practice. Don't expect to be good at it right away. You have to build the muscle for it. Also, reading really helps. Read across genres. Learn from reading how writers play with language and use it effectively to convey ideas, engage the senses, create tension and interest.

There are a few "bests" for me. I love building with words. As the writer, you're the god or goddess of your own universe. You can create and destroy. I remember one day I gave my character a limp and then later I changed my mind. With the stroke of the pen, she lost the limp and gained extrasensory perception. Good times! I also love writing because you can directly speak to another person's brain and hopefully seed it with good ideas. The world is a tough place; we humans lack wisdom and compassion. If I can write a story in a way that makes you feel empathy for a character who may have nothing obviously in common with you, then I am a successful writer.

I get up and move -- take a walk, work out, go for a bike ride. Moving helps get my mind flowing. I also call my best friend and brainstorm ideas. He's a great listener!
