Constance Gillam The idea for Lakota Dreaming came from several different sources. One is the independent film, Unbowed, the love story between an African American female teacher and a Native American prisoner just after the Civil War. I've read many books on genetic memories, so I did a "what if" until I developed a plot that I loved.
The historical aspect of LD is just a thread that's woven into the contemporary story of a career woman who's going through a tough time professionally and a tribal police captain who's trying desperately to improve the lot of his people-the Sioux.
Constance Gillam Sometimes watching a great movie gets me in the mood. Sometimes I have to journal and just do stream of consciousness to get into the flow of writing.
Constance Gillam I'm currently working on several manuscripts but the most immediate is a prequel to Lakota Dreaming. It's a historical that explores Julia's life. (For those who haven't read the book, Julia is a woman who escapes slavery and comes to live among the Lakota Sioux.)
Constance Gillam Just start writing. Don't put it off. You only get better when you write. Also, read, read, read!
