Ask the Author: Patty Campbell

“My books are romances. They are about veterans who have put their lives back together after combat injuries. I would not recommend them for middle graders. I write my books for a female audience.” Patty Campbell

Patty Campbell I'm not sure of the definition of 'fictional book world,' but I'd probably want to be in the middle of the action during the reign of Henry VIII. Back in the shadows, of course, to keep my head on my shoulders.
Patty Campbell What ever happened to my mother's father, John Todd? He disappeared completely when she was an infant. Doing genealogical research for many years has been fruitless. I know he existed because I have an old tintype photo of him and she looked just like him. What a mystery. Maybe the men in her rigidly Mormon family murdered him?
Patty Campbell Claire and Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. He is my ultimate romantic hero, willing to give up his life for her, without hesitation. Doesn't hurt that his physical description is mouthwatering. Claire is intelligent, fearless and frustrates Jamie's natural male protective instincts. They are a great combination, constantly keeping the reader turning pages.
Patty Campbell Write. Doesn't matter if it's any good or not. You have to start somewhere. Join a writer's group. Talk to other authors. Writers tend to be very generous with advice and time.
Patty Campbell The best thing about being a romance author is that I get to create a new hero to fall in love with in every new story.
Patty Campbell I'm not sure I know the exact definition of writer's block. Every author has times when they seem to run out of steam now and then. I usually do a 'what if?' session in my head. Also a free flowing stream-of-consciousness exchange with my critique partners often gets the story back on track.
Patty Campbell My new project is a Wounded Warrior trilogy. These people have had to overcome ordeals we can only imagine, just to live the 'normal' lives we take for granted.
Patty Campbell Many years ago I lived across the fence from a gorgeous young couple. Our houses were on different streets, but our large back yards connected. Every morning I saw him walk down the street in his suit, carrying a briefcase, so I knew he worked nearby. One day I happened to be in my back yard at the same time as his stunning blonde wife, so I introduced myself. I asked her where her husband worked. She said he was an undertaker. I nearly fell over. Years later I decided to write a book where my hero would be in this unusual, very necessary profession.
