Thomas Davidson I have no idea where this stuff comes from. And I hope I never find out.
Thomas Davidson For starters, you can't beat it for "low overhead" in the arts. 1 pencil, 1 sheet of paper, you're ready to go. Question: Can a photographer, violinist, painter or pottery-maker get up and jamming for less than a dollar? Answer: No.

Okay, this isn't the best thing about being a writer, but it's up on the list.
Thomas Davidson A gallon of high-voltage coffee can punch through the Dreaded Block every time. 100% guaranteed. If you're not shaking in your seat, you're not trying. Pour another cup. Strong? Hey, it tastes like battery acid, but it'll do the trick. Your Writer's Block will go down and hit the mat for the ten-count.
Thomas Davidson My most recent novel is EXIT, a near-future thriller seasoned with a bit of dark humor. As for the idea? I suddenly went blind in one eye last year, and two days later I was lying on a gurney inside the OR of Mass General Hospital. My retina had detached. While lying under the surgical drape, which resembles a burial cloth with a single eyehole, I tried not to imagine my eye being cut open with a steak knife. Instead, I daydreamed about "eyes and vision." Thanks to the anesthesia, my thoughts soon drifted to "seeing and being seen," and then "surveillance and drones." When they wheeled me out of the OR, I thought, "Hmm, I think there's a novel here." There was. Although I don't recommend lying on a gurney for story material.
Thomas Davidson This quote (unknown authorship) has been taped to my desk for years. It's absolutely dead-on.

"You must beware of advice. You must find yourself by yourself, in the context of your times. Be a serious and good lover of your work."

Amen. You're on your own. Good luck.
