As she crept down the corridor the marble floor stole the warmth from her feet. Pressing her fingertips to the crumbling door, she felt the wood writhe beneath her touch.

A couple come to mind. We had a number of burglaries in the house where we used to live. We lost the usual stuff - jewellery, computers, musical instruments. But one was quite unsettling. The burglars left all the portable, sellable kit and stole only letters. The envelopes were scattered on the floor but the letters were gone...

I was torn between three. The first was the anarcho- syndicalist world of Anarres, described in the Ursula Le Guin novel The Dispossessed. Or perhaps the south of France, the backdrop to 10.30 from Marseilles by the brilliant Sebastien Japrisot. But my final choice was Paris, as one of the team of detectives led by Commissaire Adamsberg in the Fred Vargas novels, the best of which is Seeking Whom He May Devour. They are crime novels but with an added, unsettling atmosphere.

I'm working my way through the novels of Georges Simenon. He used to write them in a 'fugue', sitting down and writing until it was finished. As a much slower writer, that alone intrigues me. I'm also reading The Spanish Civil War by Hugh Thomas. It's an enormous book - as thick as a telephone directory. I don't agree with his politics (he was a Thatcherite) but he certainly draws a detailed picture.

I sit down and write. Some days it works, some days it does not. It's easy to see when - later - you edit the work. You can see that some pieces of writing are inspired - they flow well, they surprise. Other days the work seems lame, limping along. Plodding. Some days you will produce little of worth - just accept that. It won't always be so hard!

How does a cow get inspired to make milk? It just arrives, whether I write it down or note. The trick is often to go for a walk, or take a swim, and 'access your Alpha state.' In other words, daydream!

I got the idea for Cars Just Want to be Rust when I saw a police officer driving through a remote village in Northumberland. She stopped the car to roll down the window and chat to a woman waiting at a bus stop. I was intrigued, wondering what her life was like, what kinds of crime she might have to deal with. The story grew from that. For my current book, as yet untitled, the initial idea came from an unsolved crime - the murder of the wife of a prominent businessman who was killed while sunbathing by the pool in her garden. Small seeds that grow tall!
