I knew the place and time and, as my work is set during World War Two at present, was aware of what did or might have happened during the next period. I discovered a memo from Commander Ian Fleming (who later wrote the James Bond series) which was so remarkable that I had to use it in the novel. Try to place yourself in your character's shoes and see they world through their eyes, listen to what they hear, touch what they feel, sniff the air then harvest the sensations and write about them. That's the easy bit because now you have to edit, edit and shape until it sounds right when you read it aloud.

Exercise. Either in the pool or the gym. Once I'm in the rhythm of the exercise I imagine the next scene in the novel and let it unfold around me. The only problem is that if I don't get to a keyboard quickly I might forget what happened!
