Bill Fitts When I get stuck, it’s generally because I’m trying to force my characters to say or do or be something they aren’t comfortable with. Once I figure out what’s making them reluctant to move forward, things are smoother for all of us.
Bill Fitts Other than the hours? No heavy lifting? And getting paid for doing something I love is pretty nice too. But, seriously, for me it’s the feeling of accomplishment. To reread something I’ve written, be touched by it, and know that other people have been too is a great felling. I also enjoy hanging out with my characters.
Bill Fitts Write. That’s the best advice there is. Whether you compose on the computer, with pen and paper, or with chisel on stone, sit yourself down and write. It’s as simple—and as difficult—as that.

And read. That’s also important.

As for becoming better at the craft, the best thing I ever did was to marry my wife. That and following my own advice: actually sitting down and writing. You can’t get better if you don’t actually work at it, Professor Harold Hill’s Think Method notwithstanding. You also need to get feedback.

Bill Fitts I’ve just wrapped up the sixth book (Two Needed Killing) in my cozy mystery series and have turned my attention to what’s happening in the fantasy world of Narne. A lot is going to happen in Narne and I’ve been wrestling with exactly what’s going to happen when and to whom. I’m trying to flesh out a timeline for the rest of the series—or at least for the next two or three books.

I’m new to writing in two genres and I’m trying to strike a balance. I’d like to switch between the two if possible—all the while enjoying what I’m doing. This flipping back and forth can be a little confusing. Not for me, so much—I know what I’m thinking about when I blurt something out—but for my wife, god love her. It’s harder to brainstorm when the person you’re working with keeps hopping back and forth between his imagined worlds. Nonetheless, she does an admirable job.
Bill Fitts I’m not sure being “inspired to write” applies to me. I write because I want to entertain and amuse. And because the characters I create want their voices to be heard. That’s all the inspiration I’ve got.
Bill Fitts The idea for my most recent book (Two Needed Killing, bk 6 in the Needed Killing Series) came out of a brainstorming session with my wife—like most of my ideas do. We were discussing various titles for the series and came up with “Two Needed Killing.” I’d been wanting to write about the negative impact overdevelopment was having on my hometown and I liked the notion of killing off not one but two greedy developers in Shelbyville.
