With fiction, a good song will often inspire me. Whatever feeling bubbles up, with then turn into a manuscript.
With Fortean topics, it depends on what subject is most interesting at the time. For instance, if I sudden want to learn something new about a certain cryptid I'll begin an article or blog post. Sometimes that turns into an entire manuscript.

I've got several ideas: a book on personal paranormal experiences, an Ozaukee County, Wisconsin paranormal book, and another cryptozoology book. And then there's that novel that I'm stuck on. I've no idea which one will win out.

Write, write, write. Even if your writing is terrible. If you stay at it, and learn about your craft, you'll steadily improve. I wanted to give up lots of times, but I stayed with.

If I'm working with a deadline, I'll listen to music that has a similar feeling to what I'm working on.
If I don't have a deadline, I abandon the piece and start something else. I've came back to a piece, months, sometimes years later, and finally figured out what I was trying to say.

I got the idea for Goatman: Flesh or Folklore? after interviewing a Goatman eyewitness for a previous book Washington County, Wisconsin haunted places.
The very idea that someone saw something so fantastic left a lasting impression. I quickly realized I wanted to know everything I could know about Goatman.
