When I start writing a new novel I usually know by and large the main story thread, the main characters, and the structure of the narrative. That's why I seldom hit a writer's block. Rather, I may not be in the mood to write certain scenes/chapters and in that case I switch to other scenes and come back to the skipped ones when I feel ready.
