Wilf Morgan Write short stories to begin with, don't jump straight into a novel. They help you learn structure and pacing. Also you get to explore lots of different ideas and genres to find out what you like to write.

It's a bit like visiting university open days before committing to spending several years of your life at one. (Insert a more exciting metaphor here. That's your first task as an aspiring writer.)
Wilf Morgan Speaking with people who have read what you've written. Hands down the best thing. Especially when they take away something that you didn't consciously put in. That's when the magic of storytelling (and art in general) makes itself known.

Also, the thing where the story makes its own demands as to what should happen next. That's also awesome (and helpful!)
Wilf Morgan Watching a movie is a really good way to infuse some ideas, swirl them around and see how they can be changed and applied to what you're writing. But the main thing you need to do is keep writing. Don't stop. Even though what you're writing is rubbish. Do this in conjunction with the movie thing and the ideas will suddenly come flooding in, I promise!
