J. Bennett Hello Brett,

Thanks for the question and for being a fan of both of my series. At the beginning of FALLING (book one of the Girl With Broken Wings series), Maya is your typical romantic, naive college student. She and her boyfriend, Ryan conceive of Avalon, an imaginary perfect island that they are going to build. It’s going to be beautiful and peaceful, powered only by renewal resources, and they will only allow good, hard-working people onto the island.

Ryan draws a picture of what Avalon is going to look like, and Tarren steals this drawing and brings it to Maya at their house in Pueblo, where she hangs it on the ceiling of her new bedroom.

Avalon represents a couple of different things in this story. On the surface, it is the one physical connection Maya has to her past life and to Ryan, but it also represents her early mindset. Avalon is an ideal, a piece of perfection in a black and white world where people and things can easily be categorized as good or evil. Over the course of the series, Maya comes to see that the world is full of gray and that, ironically, she would not be allowed onto her own island.
J. Bennett I wish I had all the time in the world to write. Then I would definitely continue Deidre's adventures. However, right now, I'm typing away at Flying, Book Five in my Girl With Broken Wings series. When I launch that book in 2016, I might check in on Deidre and her crazy cast of friends. Thank you so much for your excitement over the series.
J. Bennett I'm current working on the first draft of Leaping, book four in the Girl With Broken Wings series. Maya, Tarren, and Gabe must capture an angel alive to help Lo continue his research, and Maya realizes that her feelings for Rain Bailey may be getting in the way of the mission.

It's so rough right now, but I have high hopes that eventually this will become a tight and strong novel that readers of the series will love.
J. Bennett I don't experience total writer's block. Instead, I have "motivated days" and "non-motivated days" where the words feel like they move like sludge in my mind. Regardless of what type of day it is, I write. Even if I write very slowly or the words feel off, I still write. To me, it's kind of like running. Even when I'm having an off day, I will usually "click in" somewhere along the way. If I just push through the writer's block, it usually lightens up after a few hundred words, and I'm back. Otherwise, I tell myself, I can always polish it up in the editing phase.
