Hi Jim, Looking back on your January 2025 Kenya safari, was there a specific wildlife encounter or unexpected moment that changed your perspective on travel or adventure, and did that experience influence how you wrote this book?
Jim Walker The 2025 safari was special for me. In 2022 I experienced Kenya for the first time. The sunrise and sunset are so spectacular on a regular basis, and being up close and personal with the wildlife is unique. 2025 allowed me to capture some of the sightings I did not get on that first trip. Such as, a Leopard in a tree. I wrote a book about my first trip in 2022, but it was more a travel log with photos. This book was written to help prepare the first time traveler for what to expect, what to bring, and what not to bring. I want others to have the best possible experience for their first safari, which for many will be a once in a lifetime trip. On my first safari I fell in love with Kenya, the wildlife, and the people.

Hello Jim, I have a question to ask, and I will be glad if I get a response from you. I want to ask that, for someone who has never traveled outside their home country, what do you think is the most important mindset to have before going on a safari?
Jim Walker That is an interesting question. Every place I have traveled I started with the mindset that it was going to be a great experience. One I would savor for years. I can honestly say that I have only had one bad experience in all the years that I have traveled. Think positive and your results will be outstanding. Just do not expect anything to be as it is at home. Enjoy the experience of learning about different cultures and meeting great people wherever you travel.

Before your January 2025 safari, what was your biggest misconception about Kenya or safari travel, and how did the experience challenge it?
Jim Walker My first safari was in 2022, and I really did not have any misconceptions about the experience. I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions before starting that trip. It was all I hoped it would be. The only drawback at the time was having to go with what the group wanted to see. As the only bird photographer I had to grab my special shots when I could. That is one of the reasons I went on a solo trip in 2025, much more relaxed.

How much preparation did you do before the trip, and did reality match the picture you had in your mind?
Jim Walker I did as much research as I could, and the fact that my first trip was with a group of fellow photographers, I felt I was prepared as could be. I learned a lot on that 1st safari. But, yes, reality did match what I imagined, only it was even better.
