Good question, Maureen. I chose to tell the story through Virginia's perspective because hers was a fascinating coming-of-age story. She started the journey as an obedient daughter and through her external and internal struggles, reached California a year later as an independent young woman who trusted her own judgment above that of her parents'. She made a difficult decision of her own that she ultimately believed saved her whole family and changed the course of the rest of her life. I'm glad you asked--It was truly satisfying to TELL the story through her voice!
