Have the story planned out in advance and write down an outline. Then show it to as many people as you can. That way you will weed out plot flaws before you have done the hard work. Read a little just before you write until you get a tingle. Then write, and write, and write....

Becoming friends with the characters. Being in another world. I love to read, especially when the writing is good and the characters have dimension...but when I write, to me it is like reading and watching a movie at the same time. And the most beautiful thing about it all is that the story ends just the way you wanted it to.
