Bridgette Hayden I cope. I try to remember that the writing self has it's own logic and it's not stopping because it's out of steam. It's stopping because I'm holding onto a stronger idea that goes against whatever's being written, such as 'this isn't good enough,' or 'I'm scared to say this.' It's usually that I haven't given my conscious mind enough information, enough scene logic, in order for the writer to weave a narrative that it believes in. So it's figuring out, what am I trying to show? What sequence of reasoning, building blocks, will take the reader where I want the reader to go? It's that kind of work with the self that never ends.
Bridgette Hayden When the writing is going well, it's heaven, it's everything that matters. Then when reader's "get it," that's even better. It feels like love.
Bridgette Hayden Realize what it means to believe in yourself. People say that, but they still assign power to things outside of themselves. And write what you would kill to read.
Bridgette Hayden The next volume of Sonny Preyer is always building itself in the background. But I'm working on a kind of tribute novel to The Sentinel Fandom out there.
Bridgette Hayden I still don't have that figured out. If I force it, it's incredibly painful. If I wait for inspiration, that could take years. One thing that helps is realizing that the part of me that writes has its own needs, it's own requirements, for taking a feeling and structuring a scene out of it. And the more I trust this process, the more I get what I intend.

Bridgette Hayden A lot of different things came together as I watched the character Frodo, played by Elijah Wood, from Lord of the Rings. I kept feeling a different story than the one on the screen. I had amazing dreams of a healing figure in billowing black and it took some time to realize that he represented all that I wanted in a protagonist, wisdom, goodness, deep soul, etc. but not restricted to the "macho" stereotype that I find so limited.
