I knew I wanted to write a time travel about a previous period in American history. Certain books I read and certain events made me realize what time period that was, and the idea sprang from there.

I write every day, not because I have to, but because I don't feel good about it if I don't. My mind is always percolating with ideas about the novel I'm working on, and as those ideas firm up, that inspires me to sit down and write about them.

Just keep at it. I never finished my "first novel," and the second one seemed to take forever to finish. But like anything else, there's a learning curve, and as you get closer to the top, it gets more natural. So if this is something you "must" do, don't lose faith. Just keep at it.

Writing is a visceral thing with me. It's something I have to do, or I don't feel fulfilled. So on that level, I'm not sure I can say what the best thing about it is. I guess I'd have to say that the best thing about being a writer is being able to have a body of work to revise!
