Susan Baumgartner I'm rarely not pondering something. The voices of others give me the best inspiration. Turns of phrase can lead me to pages full of what I think are their context and importance. I love stories with a twist on the human condition, and while I have yet to finish an entire work of fiction, I hope to someday.
Susan Baumgartner My first book, Dear Teachers, started when I pictured myself writing letters to the great teachers in my life, attempting to instill in them the support I think they need for themselves. I already had beautiful nature photos that spoke to me of the full range of human emotions and needs- I just had to sit with them and stories began to unfold. The last part that fell into place was convincing myself the readers could and should add their own voices. That led me to add the journaling portion.
Susan Baumgartner I am about 75% through the initial sketching of my essays for and about people with type 1 diabetes. It's a deeply emotional process so I'm trying to pace myself.
