Hi Ashton!
I can tell you the precise moment the idea for NIL fell into my head. I talked about it here: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2014/03/04...
I never felt discouraged writing it, but I won't lie --there were times when I was trying to get published that were hard....not with NIL, but with my first book. I sent my first book out to agents, and got nearly 100 rejections. In hindsight, it wasn't ready, and I had work to do, both on my writing and that book. But also, so much of publishing is timing, and of course, subjective. Is the story marketable? Is the market glutted with that sort of story? Does the agent/editor/house love the story? There are so many variables out of your control; all you can control is your story and your writing. So take heart, and keep writing. Keep believing in yourself and your words, and eventually they will find the right home.:)

Yay! Thank you Layla! I'm SO glad you enjoyed the Nil books! Have you seen that a prequel is available for free wherever ebooks are legally sold? It's called NIL REMEMBERED, and it's Skye's uncle's journal in full--with illustrations. I think you'll like it. :)
Thanks again for reading and leaving me this sweet note!:) Happy reading!

HA! I love this question! I'm writing a third book right now, and your idea ties into both the second and third books.:) But I can promise that the third book will be the last, and readers will be satisfied.:)

Hi Imogen! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! I'm so glad you adored NIL! I think you'll love NIL UNLOCKED. It's both a sequel and a companion novel to NIL.
As you know, NIL has two main characters, Charley and Thad, who each have their own point of view. And when I finished NIL, I knew their story was done. But..I couldn't stop thinking about the rest of the characters left on the island and wondering what became of them. Especially Rives. I knew I'd left him alone, in a rock field with a grizzly bear in the midst of an earthquake, and I knew I had to write his story. So, NIL UNLOCKED picks up on the island of Nil precisely where NIL left off. But characters (including the main ones) from NIL appear in NIL UNLOCKED.:)
Yay! Happy reading! Thanks for the question!

Hi Katrina!:) Thank you for your kind words and all the NIL love!:)
NIL was born in Hawaii, on the big island. My hubby had won a work trip, and it was our first real getaway from our four boys, EVER. As we left the airport after landing, we drove through miles of ancient lava fields. Broken red rock stretched endlessly on each side, gorgeous and desolate. No roads, no buildings, no people–just the eerie sound of wind blowing over the rocks. I remember thinking how much it all looked like an alien planet, and thinking how creepy it would be to wake up there, alone. And I remember thinking how scary it would be as a teenager to not have a clue where you were or how you how got there, and making things worse, what if–because isn’t this every person’s worst nightmare?!–you woke up naked? NIL was born in that moment. That barren-red-rock visual locked in my head, and that's what Charley sees when she first wakes up in Nil. I wrote the first 20K words in the next week and NIL flew from there.
Thanks for the awesome question!:)

Thanks Tsunami! I'm so excited too! I'm not sure whether there will be a third...I have an idea I'm playing with so we'll see! I'm going to write it and see what I think.:) It could stop at NIL UNLOCKED, but I also think there could be a third. But there wouldn't be a fourth, unless I went backward in time, I think. Like a prequel.:)
