It happens all the time. When it does, it usually is a sign the flow of the books is not working. Taking time analyzing different paths and scenes in the vein of a though experiment usually gets me through these times. Once the path and scene has been determined, then the impetus to write takes over.

On IRRATIONAL FEARS, I started with a concept-water. Clean, fresh water is becoming scarce and will have devastating consequences all around the world. I then expanded the water idea to corporate takeover. Now, that was even scarier, especially on a global scale. One thing leads to another and that is how the plot eventually developed.
