I'd have to say ZA and Chrissy from my book, "Don't Judge Me". They have the foundation of being friends for many years first, and then they explore where else they can take their relationship.
It's natural and real and not pretty all the time. It's definitely not a fairy tale.

I started a "soap opera" to be in every issue of my friend's magazine, Her Detroit, and I wanted to write characters that I didn't know in real life. So I created them and then decided to take them from the magazine to book form.
It was a challenge for me to create a main character who was not like me at all. As a matter of fact, I didn't like her too much, but I still had to tell her story.

Songs, movies, art, people.
It all depends. Sometimes I'll have a story I just have to write. Those are usually short stories, or may end up being a minor character arc included in a big story.

I'm going to start writing the story of my life. It'll be random essays from my life. I'm scared, but excited at the same time.

Stay true to your process. It's nice to hear how others have done it in the past, or are currently doing it. But if it doesn't feel organic to you, it won't work.
I don't work with an outline for my stories. They just "happen". The characters tell me what's going on and I just write it. I've been surprised by some of the things that have happened in a story. I even cried when I killed off a character.
Your process is yours, it may help others or it may not. There's no wrong way to write how you write.

For me, writing has been a life saver. As clichéd as it sounds, it's true. I express myself better through writing. As a kid, it allowed me to create worlds where I could be who I wanted to be, who I thought I was, and who I wanted people to see me as.
As an adult, I get to tell stories that resonate with people all over the world. I can write an entirely new world that's mine and mine only, and that's a great feeling. Knowing you created something that people get lost in is amazing.

Great question. I've asked this to writer's before.lol
My way to deal is to listen to music that has inspired me in the past. Or I'll listen to songs that I have visualized a video for. That gets some sort of story started in my head, and I take it from there.
