At this moment in my life, I think I'd like to go somewhere tranquil, maybe N.K. Jemisin's world in The Killing Moon, well, there before the fighting. . . or maybe Walden Pond before the subdivisions. :)

I honestly have never given this question much thought, so if I say Edward and Bella, will everyone hate me? :)
I love a good romance as much as anyone, but I'm much more interested in friendships, I guess, particularly between women. So I'm thinking of books like the recent Lift the Sky.
But probably my favorite in that sort of fictional couple is Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett. Hard, powerful story about friendship and honesty . . . and the "real world" story around that friendships is a rich one, too.

HI K.L.,
Oh yes, I actually have my office in what was once the summer kitchen here on the farm we own. An enslaved woman would have been the cook who used that space, so it is special, sacred space for me.
Thanks for asking.

Goodness, Rapheal. I just realized I never answered this question. . . in terms of marketing advice, I'd say first and foremost, write good books. No amount of marketing prowess can make up for a mediocre book.
Then, be genuine and transparent with your marketing. Don't try to pretend you aren't selling your book.
In terms of specific advice, check out Tim Grahl's book Your First 1,000 Copies. My friend Ed Cyzewski, whose book Write Without Crushing Your Soul is also stellar, sent me to Grahl's book, and it was really helpful.
Good luck.

Hey Otis, thanks for the question . . . it's a good one.
I came to write The Slaves Have Names after my mother died and I was living back at home with my dad. He has lived - my family has lived - on what was once a slave plantation for over 25 years. So here I was, in the midst of grief and taking long walks every day in the midst of buildings built by enslaved people and land cleared by their hands. Yet, I realized I knew almost nothing about these people. So I begin to research and learn . . . and this book came to life.
I hope you enjoy the book, Otis.

I actually don't believe in writer's block. I believe that stuff gets in our way of writing, but some sort of figurative thing that stops the writing - nah. I think we have to sit down and write, even when we think we don't have anything to say. We open the faucets and leave them that way until we get some words flowing.
