The initial idea for Between the Starlight was sparked by a conversation that I had with a teacher. It wasn’t so much what she said; it was that I could feel her concern for the girls at her school and everything they deal with. I was left pondering why. Why don’t they know how special they are? Why do they look outside themselves for the answers they’re seeking, even if it hurts them? Why do we all do that? The character of Alexa, a girl who seems to have it together, on the outside at least, started to come to life in my mind. And that’s when her journey for those answers began.

My favorite thing about writing is getting to connect with people on such an amazing level. When someone feels the emotion of one of my stories the way I do, there's just nothing else like it.

The first thing I do is stop staring at my computer screen. After that, there are a few things that seem to do the trick. Listening to music is huge for me. Lyrics with feeling always pull me into that place where I can start to imagine my own stories. Tasks that allow me to focus only part of my attention on them help a lot, too. In other words, I do something that lets me daydream. Lastly, I try to set aside long blocks of time for writing. I don't get nearly enough of them, but they're so much more productive than a short time each day because I generally don't hit my stride until a couple hours in.

Write from your heart. Your stories are unique and they're a gift you've been given. If you write to conform to the opinions of others, you'll lose your voice. And that's not what this is all about.
