Marcus Baram I was a longtime fan of Gil's music. I'll never forget being at my first concert of his in the early 1990s and realizing that no one had ever written a book about his life and legacy. Right then, I knew that I had to do it.
So few musicians were as committed to artistic and political integrity. And so few were able to harness their poetry and music to a greater cause and in a way that still made you move your feet and dance to the rhythm.
Marcus Baram Great conversation (my 7-year-old son started asking me questions about mortality and the ability to extend longevity through new technologies and I immediately thought it would be a great topic for a novel). And reading. Always reading.
Marcus Baram Working on being a good dad and husband and citizen. And my day job as an editor at Fast Company magazine. Right now, I'm digging into a few stories for FC and haven't even started to think about the next book (though I'd love to do another one, preferably on current events and news).
Marcus Baram Write whenever and wherever you feel the inspiration - get a cheap composition notebook at the CVS and carry it with you everywhere.
And follow through on your passion for an idea or story - if you keep thinking about it, write and get it published anywhere (your own blog, Medium, etc.).
Marcus Baram That's so hard to say - and the difficult of that answer encapsulates everything about the experience of writing. One of the few expressive tools we have is language and yet our vocabulary is so limited, in terms of getting across a myriad of emotions and feelings. And that's the essential challenge of writing - how to put the right words together to express your thoughts. To tackle that challenge, wrestle with and come up with some satisfying lines of prose is unbelievably satisfying and exciting.
Marcus Baram It's not easy - I have to write up strict schedule for myself. That on Tuesdays from 9-10pm, I will sit down and write. And I have to reward myself (pint of ice cream) or punish myself (do the dishes by hand in the sink for the whole week)
