Hi Vicky, I didn't come up with that until deep into the story when I was watching Deadpool - In one of his lines, he joked, "Well that's just lazy writing." I laughed hard, and for some reason, that line stuck with me.
In my down time, I like to watch a lot of book reviews on TT and YT, and read them on here as well. Whenever there is time travel or time magic involved, I hear the same complaint over and over - "well that's predictable or that's a given. Rewind time, go back, fix problem, done."
That's when I came up with the VCR record over feature of time magic. If you rewound time, went back and did something new - that's still the original timeline, but now erased and replaced with whatever new you did. No grandfather paradox, no undo, no lazy writing.
And in my book - a madman steals a wand that can rewind and fast forward the passage of time. He uses that information to know where his enemies will strike, and what they will do - so he's always one step ahead.
(and in Book 2, he takes Anica 65 million years into the past because he thinks it'll be fun to troll anthropologists in the future by painting UFO's and Godzilla on cave walls) and it was then (i think) that I thought about what if it doesn't create an alternate timeline, but records over the original?
Being a Gen X girl, I remember accidently recording over a favorite show or movie and how devastated I was, so I thought I would add that into my book. Now with a madman stopping at nothing to get his hands on it, it's a dangerous item to have - which in my opinion makes for an interesting story and not lazy writing. :-)
