Ken Doyle (In reference to the short story, Saturday Date):

1. The character Mary has visions of the Virgin Mary, but it's left to the reader to decide whether these are actual religious visions or some other cause as revealed toward the end of the story. (avoiding spoiler here)

2. She actually doesn't have a good voice, but people give her money anyway, largely out of compassion or pity. The visions initially gave her the idea to start singing when she was trying to soothe the sick child, but they aren't directly responsible for her voice.

3. Mary is Catholic, but her faith is tested by her life experiences. Like many Catholics, she is fighting an internal battle between the religion she was raised with and the harsh reality of the life she is leading.
