Randall B. Hicks When I think of a "couple" I assume husband/wife or something similar. But when I first saw this question the "couples" who popped into my mind were friendships. Since I'm a big fan of mystery/detective-type books, I thought of Robert Crais' Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, and from Robert Parker, Spenser and Hawk. In each instance, the two friends were in many ways polar opposites but their common underlying morality and great friendships made them very effective literary characters.
Randall B. Hicks Although I grew up as a big reader, going through all the Hardy Boys and Tom Swift books, then reading Nancy Drew, I wasn't motivated to write until I read Gregory McDonald's FLETCH. That book made me say, "Someday, I want to write a book like that." So when I wrote THE BABY GAME and BABY CRIMES, it was a light mystery but with deep relationships, clues fairly planted and a stunner of an ending. I've had the chance to meet many of my favorite authors at conventions and signings, but sadly Gregory McDonald passed away before I got the chance to meet him.
Randall B. Hicks I had a great idea for a young adult book years ago and did nothing with it except to write down the first few pages. Now, five years later, I'm in the writing mood to get back to it. It's my first fiction that is not a mystery/thriller, more of a coming of age tale. The acronym for the title is TGWAF, since the title is top secret. Ha. My daughter, who just finished college and is closer in age (not to mention gender) than me to the main character, a 15 year old girl, that she is reviewing what I write and I hope her role may even evolve into being a co-writer with me.
