For Escape Routes, working with inmates and living in a decomposing hovel in a tiny logging town in California. The characters are fictional but the speech, social interactions and environment give authentic glimpses into this seldom-seen slice of rural America. For my first novel, Lies and Love in Alaska, the idea came from working as a freelance writer for a singles magazine in Alaska. It was long before online dating made hard copy magazines obsolete.

Frankly, it allows me to practice an addiction (writing) with no harm, no socially unacceptable behavior, no danger to self or others, and no side-effects other than accumulation of dust on my shelves when I'm chasing an idea.
