Erika Bryant Honestly, from my own life. After Doing It Scared, people kept telling me the place they were most afraid wasn't their career, it was love. I realized it was true for me too. I had spent years overgiving, performing, and calling it loyalty. This book is me telling the truth about that so someone else can stop doing it sooner than I did.
Erika Bryant Real people. I've spent over thirty years in music and television and interviewed thousands of people, and the stories that stay with me are always the honest ones. When something makes me laugh and hurts a little at the same time, I know I need to write about it.
Erika Bryant Getting Doing It Scared in Love & Relationships into as many hands as possible, and building out the Doing It Scared world beyond the page, including conversations, workshops, and a series of true stories from the book. I'm also developing new unscripted television through my company, Iron Orchid Media.
Erika Bryant Write a little every day, even if it's just 10 minutes. It's less about the word count and more about building the habit of having that time set aside for yourself. And do it scared. I self published both of my books, which meant betting on myself when no one else had yet. Embrace the fear and lean into it instead of running from it. That fear usually means you're about to write something that matters.
Erika Bryant Hearing from readers who say, "I thought I was the only one." That's everything. Writing lets me sit with someone in a moment I'll never see and remind them they're not alone.
Erika Bryant I stop trying to sound smart and just tell the truth. Most of the time the block isn't about words, it's about fear of saying the real thing. So I say it out loud first, like I'm talking to a girlfriend, and then I write that down.
