That's an interesting question. I imagine you're referring to The Children's Home, although my first novel is also about a girl who is brought up by people other than her own parents. To be honest, I'd never really thought of the children in The Children's Home as foster children or of Morgan as a foster parent, probably because the children chose Morgan rather than the other way round but also because they don't conform at all to one's idea of ordinary children. They're strange from the start, from the moment of their arrival, and behave as though the house were theirs in a way foster children, I imagine, generally don't. What I really wanted to write about was the effect such children might have on a reclusive man like Morgan, and how their presence might change him. Everything else grew from that.
