Robert H. Boyer I have had two near-death experiences in my life, one when I was a youngster of five or six when I nearly drowned until someone pulled me up to his floating log; the second was when I was about 21 and driving a truckload of logs; when the breaks failed I had to get off the road to avoid hitting the car ahead of me, despite the fact that there was a row of mature trees lining the roadside; at the last minute a thought popped into my mind that I should at least turn sharply to try avoid the tree directly in front of me. I did, and I ended up in an empty field, still in the truck but with the load of logs now scattered harmlessly on the ground. Both of these experiences remain mysteries to me. They convinced me that what I had learned at a very early age, that we all have a guardian angel, was real. Angels continue to fascinate me, and an Angel is a central figure in my novel, "The Magic Necklace of Al-Andalus." Thanks for asking. And, yes, I still wonder about the two experiences I just related.
Robert H. Boyer I've been mulling over an answer since this question was posted and I keep coming up with the same answer, C.S. Lewis's Narnia. The likeliest reason is that Lewis portrayed it in such memorable detail, particularly the characters. I would love to converse with Mr. Tumnus and Reepicheep, among others. I've visited one site (Magdelain College Park) and imagined that I found where Mr. Tumnus was seen walking, with his tail over his arm to keep it from the snow.
Robert H. Boyer Hesitantly I picked up the receiver. There was someone there.
