Emma and Mr Knightley are my favourite couple. Austen is such a clever writer that the reader, like Emma herself, doesn’t even notice that they’re made for one another until more than three-quarters of the way through the novel. They make a comfortable pair from the very beginning and Mr Knightley is always there, sometimes in the background, sometimes in the foreground, gently guiding her when Emma needs it.

At the moment I'm finishing off the second book in the Regency Spies trilogy. This is the follow up to The Heart that Lies and tells what happens to Edmund Finch during 1812. It's just about to go off to the editor, so should be available in the autumn.

I sit down with a blank piece of paper and work out what it is that's on my mind and preventing me from being creative. I write it down and put it somewhere where I know I'll see it again and then get back to writing. There may be more than one thing that I've been trying to hold in my head and once they're out of the way the block is usually gone.

I was reading one of those "One hundred years ago today" articles in a newspaper after a Boxing Day walk. As I read it I thought how interesting it was and what a big event it must have been for those who experienced it. Then I started to think about how two complete strangers could meet at just that place and time without any of the usual social constraints. A bit more research gave me a story about two brothers and a sister and the woman they meet on that day.
