Hi Arlene- thanks for the great question! I think it depends on the reader and hope some young adults will be drawn in by the teen coming of age story, and relate to the claustrophobic experience of growing up on an island with only one exit in the pre-Internet days.
The Gypsy Moth Summer is, in many ways, about the gaps in understanding between generations and I imagine all young readers can relate to that.
I did not write the novel with young readers in mind but when I was a teen I was reading books beyond my understanding. In fact, we moved when I was young and our new house had been semi-abandoned. The previous owner had left behind hundreds of paperbacks--romance, horror, mystery. That was my first library and most of the books were definitely for much older readers. It was thrilling, and empowering, to read books of my own choice, so to speak, even if I had many sleepless nights after reading Cujo and Salem's Lot.
