Josh Weiss-Roessler Yes. This is book one in the Future Me series. Starting with the characters entering sixth grade, each book follows them through that school year and tells a complete story, with them solving some kind of big, scary problem related to technology. But there's also a bigger, overarching narrative that continues from book to book.
Josh Weiss-Roessler I don't think so. The story involves a group of smart, techie kids, and uses gaming and technology as a backdrop. But it’s honestly kind of retro. Sometimes I call it a "kids on bikes" adventure, because even though there's a wild sci-fi premise and they're often using pseudo-sciency gadgets, a lot of it is just a group of friends investigating around their school and town. And the emotional core is all about friendships, pressure, and figuring out how to move forward when things don’t go the way you expect.
Josh Weiss-Roessler I wrote this for upper middle grade readers (roughly 10–14), but believe particularly precocious 9-year-olds (or those reading with their parents) will enjoy it as well. And, of course, any older readers who enjoy fast-paced sci-fi with a strong emotional core.
Josh Weiss-Roessler So many things that it's hard to answer quickly. I wanted to explore how kids are interacting with technology -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. I was also drawn to ideas around feeling helpless, striving for control, and discovering the world is messier than you thought. And I really, really wanted to bring the "magic school series" format that has worked so well in fantasy into the realm of science fiction, because I don't think anyone has quite given sci-fi its Hogwarts yet. I hope I have.
