Many things inspired BURNING DAWN, but the instigator was definitely Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Their dragon lore was arguably more complex and fascinating compared to most media at the time. It presented dragons as a magical people with their own history and culture, not just wild beasts who could or should be tamed, if not killed.
One day, when frustrated by the lack of dragon lore out there, I decided to just do a "for fun" lore page of my own. I created the dragons, world, and culture that would later become In Tween. The first characters and their bios were also created: Yachalan, Yekk, and Vachka.
While I would not write the book until years later, it all started there.
