Rick St. John To my mind, it is simple. Just two things. Read - - - a lot! Write - - - a lot! I believe that the best writers are voracious readers who practice their craft daily. It doesn't hurt to be humble, either. Be prepared for what you consider to be "some of your best work" to be just "oh hum" to discerning readers.
Rick St. John I do some busy work related to the project I am working on, such as research or cleaning up/filing notes, then try again. If that doesn't work, I hit the gym for a work out. Sometimes I put a lot of miles on the treadmill working through writer's block!!!
Rick St. John I was the company commander of Tiger Bravo during much of the period covered by the book and have always thought that our story needed to be told. Originally, I planned to write about the battle in July when we went to the aid of two A Company platoons that were cut off and surrounded.
However, as I began to research and talk to other veterans of Bravo, I soon realized that there was so much more to our story. How could I not include a bayonet charge or rock and roll in the mess hall or street fighting during Tet? Gradually, my body of knowledge expanded to where I could write a narrative about the entire first year. So, I did!
