Maria D'Angeles Michael - thank you, this is a kind and careful question. You've read closely, and you're right that the work is personal: it grows out of a real life, a real place, and the stories I've carried for years come from there rather than solely from invention. But I'd rather let the novel hold the personal themes than narrate my own. Some of that is privacy, which matters a lot to me; some of it is that real lives rarely arrange themselves into the clean arc a reader might expect, and I'd be making a tidier story than the truth if I tried. What I can tell you is that identity, family, and being seen before you're ready are not abstract themes for me. I think that in a book, in stories, is the most honest place for them to live. Thank you for reading so generously.
