Just write. It may not be good. It may not be a story, but it will help you get there. If you have a character ask that character some icebreaker questions. Who are your parents? What did you bring to show and tell as a child? What's your favorite color? They'll never make it into the story but knowing your character inside and out can help build a story. Sometimes a character will write their own story.

I was writing a story centered around the arch angel Lucifer when Amber from The Infected: An H1-2M1 Chronicle started fighting to be heard. She was a strong female lead that just didn't fit into that world. The world she belonged in had no angels. Her world took off in my imagination as I flipped through the primary debates and zombie shows. I wanted her world to be realistic. A fictional world that made you nervous because our reality could very well be The world Amber's grandparents grow up in.
