Haha! Some of the likable characters, most notably Ron, gave permission to tell their stories in the book. In cases like that, I used their actual names. Those characters that are more villainous in my stories, if they have recognized themselves, they have not told me about it! Although, let's be real, based on the behaviors that earned them prominence in my stories, I would go out on a limb and guess that they are not avid book readers to begin with.

(view spoiler)[[Spoilers in the following answer!] This question refers to the line on page 136 where I simply write "And devastatingly, Scott had committed suicide." Unfortunately, I think the shock and lack of explanation that accompanies the revelation in the book comes close to mimicking how I experienced it in real life. That event took place just over one year after Speedee Car Wash washed its last car. I had moved out of state, so I was not in as frequent of contact with my cousin as I had been even 6 months earlier. I just got a phone call one Sunday evening from my parents saying “Your cousin Scott shot himself last night.” He did not leave a note or anything, so we were all left to speculate as to what he was dealing with that led him to do it. :’( (hide spoiler)]

I was inspired to write "Washing Cars & Wasting Time" after reading Steve Dublanica's "Waiter Rant" book. I always enjoyed retelling the stories from my car wash days, but reading Steve's book was what really first made the light bulb go off above my head and think to myself "maybe I could write a book too."

The stories in "Washing Cars & Wasting Time" were accumulated during the 7 years I spent working at my family's car wash while I was in high school and college. The next significant job I held was the ~7 years I spent working as a college professor. I witnessed just as many crazy, funny, and unbelievable things in the class room as I had in the stalls of Speedee Car Wash. The book I am working on now is a compilation of all of my "Professor Oliva" adventures.
