Drew Glass The Make Right Man is, of course, a novel that revolves around criminal activity. But to me it's more than that. The Make Right Man piece of the story is how Billy helps and serves the neighborhood. Standing up for others and taking care of people who need a hand with something - not necessarily criminal - that requires a little "persuasion" or resources they don't have. Beyond that, the book is a sort of love letter to the place I grew up. And within it, I strove to layer in several love stories - Billy and his first love and true love, Billy and Karp, Billy and Rosie, Billy and his son, and Billy/Karp and the neighborhood that formed them.
Drew Glass My Grampa, Stan Glazewski (Glass), was and still is my role model and north star. When I resolved to start pursuing putting stories down in print, I thought there was no better way to honor him than to use his last name - at least the Americanized version of it.
Drew Glass I was born and raised in Bridgeport and spent the first twenty-six years of my life there. It was a neighborhood filled with unforgettable characters, strong personalities, and stories that seemed to grow a little larger every time they were told. While The Make-Right Man is entirely fiction, the people I grew up around, the big family I came from, and the places that shaped me all influenced the world of the novel. In many ways, the book is my love letter to the neighborhood and the people who made it memorable.
Drew Glass Yes. Back in my early 20s one of my friends brought around a guy named "Dean". Dean was a guy who had a Ratzo Rizzo (Midnight Cowboy) look to him. So when he first showed up to a party, others were backing off? Me. He was catnip. So I struck up a conversation with him. I was the only person, aside from the friend who brought him, who talked to the guy all night. After this, each time Dean showed up, he would latch on to me and we'd talk it up. After a couple years, Dean leaned in and told me to do same. He said, "Hey, Drew, I love ya. If you ever need anything done, someone to back off, something to go away, just call me. Your name never gets involved." From that moment, the seed was planted about just who this guy really was and what he was capable of.
