Michael Cairns Hi Sophya
Thanks for the question, it's such a tough one to answer. To be honest, it can depend on what I'm reading.
However, to name a few...
Joe Abercrombie
Steven Erikson
Neal Stephenson
Sarah Waters
Terry Pratchett
Neil Gaiman
Jaime Hernandez
Terry Moore
Alan Moore
David Lapham
George RR Martin
so yeah, it's tough to choose a favourite... :)
Michael Cairns Hi Leila
The Dragonlance Books are ace. Start with Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Magaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
Not at all a silly question! I must confess I avoid computer games because I just don't have the time. It's far too easy to lose days to computer games that could be spent writing :)
Michael Cairns Hi Leila
Thanks so much for your question, and for buying my books! I hope you enjoy them.
The dragons question is tricky. I do feature a dragon in two of the NInja Zombie Killer books, though I don't want to say which as it's a bit of a spoiler.
As far as writing a 'dragon' book, the challenge for me is finding something new or interesting to do with them. I adore the Melanie Rawn trilogies, and I grew up reading Dragonlance, so I, too, love dragons, but I'm yet to find a way to do them justice, or write something I don't think I've read before.
I hope that answers your question. If I do find myself writing something dragon-based, I'll be sure to let you know :)
Have a lovely day.
Michael Cairns Hey Nikki
Not at all annoying!! It's out! http://www.amazon.com/Thirteen-Roses-...
I'm so sorry, I've been remiss with my mailing list of late. Because of this crazy challenge I've set myself this year, I've been in full-on editing mode to try and get my dark fantasy trilogy (featuring zombies :) ready for release before the end of September. I'm nearly there, I'm pleased to say, but it's stopped me doing anything else!
Thanks so much again for your interest and I hope you enjoy it :)
Michael Cairns Hi Nikki
Thanks so much for your question! Sorry I've been tardy on this release. I can guarantee it'll be out before the end of August.
I should have a more concrete date at the start of next week, so I'll let you know as soon as I've got it nailed down.
Hope that's okay.
cheers
Michael Cairns Hi Nikki
Thanks so much, I'm so chuffed you're enjoying it. :)
Book six should be out by next weekend, so the 22nd? It was supposed to be a couple of weeks earlier but things have been crazy here the last few weeks.
Thanks again.
Michael Cairns Hi Philip
Thanks so much for your question. I do self-promote my work and do so in any number of ways. The marketing side of things was, and still is, a huge and scary world for me. :)
My main form of marketing is building relationships with readers and potential readers. I do this through my blog, twitter and, of course, Goodreads. This is the slow burn approach, but so far I've found it both effective and ultimately satisfying. Outside of the books, I've also made some lovely friends!
With the relaunch of the Spirit Room in the summer, I also did some paid advertising and coupled it with a blog tour. The paid stuff varied in terms of effectiveness.
I'll stop there, but if you want to talk more, please feel free to email me on the address on my website cairnswrites.com, and I can let you know what worked well and what didn't!
cheers
Michael Cairns I get to disappear into my imagination on a daily basis. In doing so, I get to write about people doing things I can never do - e.g. riding dragons - saying things I may well never say - e.g. goodness me, that's a dragon - and avoid doing anything real for a considerable period of time. This is a good thing.
Michael Cairns Write! Write as often as you can, as much as you can. Much of it will be rubbish to start with, but as long as you read what you're written and learn how to improve it, you'll get better. Once you have something written, you can always make it better. If you don't have anything written, you've got nothing.
