Ignore it! Even if you think you are operating on auto-pilot and just going through the motions, keep going. The flow will return (and you can always go back and do another re-write!) but don't halt the process - don't get a 'thing' about working. Some days are great, some are hard - but you have to keep going.

Good reviews may be important for publicity but it's the feedback fro readers that is the vital element - and even if only one reader contacts you to say the book truly moved them - then it was worth all the effort.

It can be a variety of stimuli. Sometimes just a word or a phrase will suggest something - but usually a situation (maybe something in the news) will provoke a line of thought and I take it from there.

I wanted to create a new detective but someone a little different - so I set the book in 1935. It's great to adapt to a scenario where there is no modern technology - no mobiles, internet or computers. The period allowed me to fashion my characters and the novel grew from there.
