Annie Jones This may seem counter intuitive to lovers of the written word but in today's landscape, I'd tell beginners that it's not enough to learn to write a good book, you have to learn to market a good book. I've been old school too long, relying on my publishers then later my own reputation as a writer to find readers. That's not enough if you hope to share your work with a wide audience.
Annie Jones I grew up an Air Force kid, admiring and adoring Air Force wives, my own mother most of all. So I knew I wanted to honor those unique relationships. My mother had some that last her whole life and passed on to her kids. Add to that my love of vintage, and of vintage women's magazines, and the elements for The Fabulous Flamingo Girls began.
In this book I introduced Helen Hartman, who went on the be a web presence of her own. Over the years it took to finish this book - yes, this is one of THOSE books that an author can't ever abandon, that calls her back again and again - I came to love and be Helen, adding a new depth and joy in her creation.
The mother and daughter connections at the heart of this come from the realities of all the women I know. It was fun and touching to explore the many phases of those relationships and uncover the scars and healing they can bring.
