Being part of a large family has provided me with many ideas and the desire to share some of the fun experiences. As a young adult I injured my ankle and was unable to run for a time, so I let the main character experience that challenge. Winter weather in rural Minnesota can also be complicated and I wanted the readers to experience a little of it.

Sometimes it is as simple as seeing something that reminds me of something unique, and sometimes I am passionate about a subject. Lately I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about beginning band. I loved band class, so I’m hoping to write a book that would encourage students to give it a try.

I mostly just wait to be inspired. I do write down and collect random thoughts that I think I could expand upon.

I am working on three books for children. They are not close to publication, but I’ve enjoyed thinking about and editing them.

Keep writing! Everything improves with practice. The more that you practice and exercise your writing muscles, the easier it will become. The same is true of practicing an instrument, singing, becoming a better runner, basketball player, cooking, or really anything.

I enjoy being able to create situations for the characters. I love to read, but when I read, I have no control over what happens to the characters. When I write, I have many opportunities to expand upon, and influence the characters.
