Spend as much time (if not more) reading as you do writing, and read widely. Try to write as often as you can, even if it's just a few lines a day. Always carry a notebook for ideas. And don't give up! Being a good writer is important but so is luck. You never know when the person who will love your work will appear so keep trying. Keep sending your work out, keep entering competitions, and have faith in yourself.

I find a lot of inspiration comes from reading - fiction, non-fiction, newspapers. Sometimes it can be direct, such as the Madeleine McCann story inspiring me to write Stolen. But sometimes it can just spark a vague idea or a what if? Finding ideas isn't the hard part, it's developing them into something bigger that takes time.

I didn't know what to do - should I go up there? Should I call the police? In the end, things settled down, but t he question kept nagging me - at what point should we get involved?
