Ideas come in different ways but one thing is always the same: When I finish one book I can't imagine starting another one. Then one day, I start to feel lost and antsy and out of sorts. Then it's time to let inspiration find me.

Five years ago Jill Weber the illustrator, with whom I'd worked before on The Christmas Tree, sent me a newspaper obituary about a cat named Pretty Boy who had lived in the East Village and become a kind of neighborhood mascot. He belonged to no one and everyone. When he died at about age 22 he left behind many mourners. I was working on a biography of Wendy Wasserstein at the time, but I couldn't stop thinking about that cat, and the community he created. Eventually, I began to imagine how that came to be.
