Julie Salamon Five years ago Jill Weber the illustrator, with whom I'd worked before on The Christmas Tree, sent me a newspaper obituary about a cat named Pretty Boy who had lived in the East Village and become a kind of neighborhood mascot. He belonged to no one and everyone. When he died at about age 22 he left behind many mourners. I was working on a biography of Wendy Wasserstein at the time, but I couldn't stop thinking about that cat, and the community he created. Eventually, I began to imagine how that came to be.
